What Are Challenge Rides?

Challenge rides are to cyclists as marathons are to runners. They are mass participation cycling events that have enjoyed incredible popularity in Europe for decades and are now beginning to gain a following here in North America. Very much like gran fondos, or big rides, challenge rides usually include a large number of cyclists riding distances of 40, 80 or 180 km. These rides are enjoyed by cyclists of varying skill levels — everyone from the competitive cyclist to the amateur wanting to challenge him or herself over distance and/or time.

Challenge rides are judged by the challenges they offer… challenging climbs, long distances, and a combination of the two. The Challenge Ride 180 will not disappoint.  While these are not races, top finishers are often recognized, and all 2012 participants will be rewarded with a Founding Riders Finisher’s Medal. This will be a challenge worth bragging about!

Challenge Ride 180 is two back to back days of cycling over the weekend of August 18 and 19, 2012 in the beautiful countryside surrounding the Bay of Quinte.

In addition to the full Challenge Ride 180, a distance and ride designed to challenge one’s maximum endurance, there will be shorter, less hilly versions – the Challenge Ride 80 and Challenge Ride 40. This is appropriate for those who are not quite ready for the full distance but still want to participate in the challenge.

Participants are able to mix and match their ride distances each day. Ride distances offered each day are: CR 180, a 180 km distance ride, CR 80 an 80 km ride, and CR 40, a 40 km ride. For example you may opt-in to ride two days each at 180 km or you can test yourself with one day of a shorter distance and one of the full distance. If you are not quite ready for a 180 km ride then select a combination of the shorter distances. And of course if your schedule doesn’t allow for riding two days back to back then you can choose to ride one day only. Our objective is to give you the options that best fit your personal riding goals. Riders of all ages and ability levels are welcome and encouraged to participate.

Participation in Challenge Ride 180 is limited, and rides likes these typically sell out quickly. Register early to ensure you don’t miss out!
